A closer look at the most beautiful campsites in the world

From Botswana to the United Kingdom, via Normandy, we have listed for you some of the best campsites in the world. Each setting is more breathtaking than the last.

Mombo Camp, Botswana

Mombo Camp sits in the shade of tall trees overlooking a floodplain that can literally teem with wildlife.

Accommodation at Mombo consists of nine luxury tents linked by wooden walkways and raised on timber platforms, giving guests the best chance of watching the action from their veranda.

Each room has a bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers overlooking the floodplains, and sofa areas that also look out over the plains: armchair safaris are not uncommon.

The main lounge and dining area are thatched. You can dine under the stars or have an early breakfast around a fire when the chill sets in.

Paperback Camp, Australia

This camp is dedicated to luxurious African safari tents in the Australian bush, two hours south of Sydney. For the privacy of campers, the canvas tents with steel frames are separated from one another by shrubs.

These are African originals that have been used as safari accommodation for around 50 years. The tents stand on raised platforms and are furnished with a blend of rustic and luxurious pieces, such as handmade furniture and wool duvets. The camp covers 88 hectares to explore, but Jervis Bay is also a haven of peace well worth discovering.

The bay is home to colonies of penguins and seals, as well as many dolphins. Nearby attractions include Booderee National Park, famous for its white sand beaches. Wine tasting at the award-winning local vineyards is also a must. The safari style in the Australian bush suits most travellers exploring the destination.

La Rosa, United Kingdom

Some have called La Rosa the “most camped campsite”. Staying there is undeniably a touching, strange and unforgettable bohemian experience.

The site’s sheer eccentricity adds to the fun of the camping adventure, with its abundance of knick-knacks scattered about. The nine caravans range from vintage to classic and vary in size, two of them being genuine chrome Roma trailers.

Each has a specific theme (Bollywood, Psychocandy, British 50’s Seaside, African Safari 1970) and is decorated with the appropriate kitsch, always second-hand and recycled.

The campsite owners have an ecological philosophy: the toilets (an old pre-war shepherd’s hut) are compost toilets. There is no electricity, but there are candles and moonlight.

Campers are provided with a cauldron for making mulled wine for evening campfires.

Most of the site is wooded and home to many wild species, such as roe deer and owls. The campsite is limited to sixteen people, so it is uncrowded and peaceful. The site lies within the North York Moors National Park, where hiking trails are, of course, plentiful.
